Phoenix Fan Fusion ( a comic convention held in the heart of Phoenix, Arizona) runs May 23rd through May 26th. That is only 13 DAYS away. As someone who frequents the cosplay scene (I may dress up A LOT) it’s common for me to research events before attending them. Phoenix Fan Fusion (formerly Phoenix Comicon) suffered a blow to their very lenient cosplay policy 2 years ago when an deranged fan snuck a bag of guns into the Phoenix Convention Center for the sole purpose of killing the Green Power Ranger. Since then Phoenix PD and the Convention Center have been VERY strict on ALL conferences held in the area. So how do YOU survive cosplaying at Phoenix Fan Fusion? Here we go…
Allowed Props & Costumes
Per the Costume Props Policy, the following items ARE permitted on premises during the convention…
- Lightsabers
- Wands
- Sonic Screwdrivers
- Inoperable and unstrung bows with tipless arrows
- Foam, plastic, fiberglass, resin or metal shields with no sharp edges
- Armor made of plastic, fiberglass, resin, or metal
- Lightweight plastic bats
- Any costume item or prop made of Plastic, Thermoplastic (Worbla), Urethane Resin, Cardboard, Foam, Foam Rubber, or other lightweight material (balsa wood is allowed)
The convention HAS NOTED that ANYONE wearing masks or make up that alters their appearance should have their LEGAL ID ready. Additionally, anything worn that impairs vision or movement is asked to have a handler or guide to prevent mishaps.
Forbidden Props & Costumes
So what CAN’T you wear and/or bring to this event? Well, that includes (but is not limited to)…
- ANY replica firearm (whether it be realistic or unrealistic)
- Tasers
- Glass Props
- Stone Props
- Slingshots
- Brass Knuckles
- Real, replica, or simulated explosives, ammunition, chemical weapons of any kind
- Metal or wood swords and other sharp-edged weapons (note that lightweight wood or wood hybrid materials are allowed)
- Excessively noisy props
- Stick On Shoes (seriously, it’s too hot for them to work)
Entry Points
This convention uses the Police Department, hired security and metal detectors. PLAN FOR A WAIT. If you can make bag check faster by using a clear bag that is suggested. If you are wearing a complicated costume please understand that you may spend 5-10 minutes be inspected. There IS a weapons inspection area prior to entering the event center that you MUST stop by if you have a hand held prop.
Con Surival
Arizona is a WARM climate. Be sure to bring water. You are allowed an empty, refillable water container (there are refill points) OR an unopened bottle of water. There are typically water and drink stations throughout the convention center to help keep you hydrated.
Photographers roam ALL OVER this event so be prepared to have your photo taken. If you DO NOT want your photo taken speak up and tell the photographer. If you are being harassed find a staff member (they typically have large badges and are in yellow or black shirts) and report it. This event has a strict Cosplay Is Not Consent policy.
