Rowan Black is a police detective and witch. When she’s interrupted at a ritual and called to a hostage situation, she discovers a man she has never met demanding to speak to her and only her. After he gets a little help self-imolating, Rowan finds herself in the middle of the start of a mystery. It’s clear someone is after both her and her coven, but could the secret be someone far back in her history?
Black Magick: The First Book of Shadows collects issues #1-11. The comic is well written and hard to put down. It’s one part detective story, one part story of witchcraft and it does an excellent job of continuing its twists as the story goes along. The artwork is mostly black and white, but also includes the occasionally splash of color to bring attention to important aspects of the story.
