Critical Role‘s Vox Machina is back with an all new adventure! Based on the popular livestream that centers around nerdy ass voice actors playing Dungeons and Dragons, Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins II Issue #1 follows the adventures of campaign one’s party before the livestream began.
Published through Dark Horse comics, this comic kicks off shortly after the events of the first volume. Vox Machina is still reaping in the benefits of liberating the town of Stilben by killing foes and enjoying plenty to drink at night. However, there’s soon trouble in paradise as Grog begins to have strange, dare we say it, thoughts.
Once again, this series continues to charm its audience with its perfect balance of action and comedy. It encapsulates the essence of Dungeons and Dragons so well, from the mechanics of the game to the shear insanity that can occur at any moment. Yet, it all feels incredibly organic. Characters play off each other very well and are incredibly charming. We also get a new character towards the end of the issue that’s sure to be great in the future.
Again, the art is on par with the previous volume. One of the strongest aspects of this comic is the attention to detail, even in the smallest of moments. There’s one series of panels that shows something so simple, the characters sharing a room at night, and you immediately know everything you need to know about each character in just those few panels. It truly is storytelling at its finest.
You can feel the love that was poured into this project. It’s apparent from start to finish. The attention to detail and overall craft will leave you grinning from page one. What the Critical Role team has created is nothing but a contagious swell of positive emotions. This feeling seems to emit from everything they touch. We’ll certainly be on the lookout for future issues and anything else this amazing team intends to dish out!
If you haven’t had a chance to read Vox Machina Origins, you really should. And if you have, then you definitely need to pick up your copy of Vox Machina Origins II #1. This is high fantasy at its finest. And it certainly won’t disappoint you like a popular fantasy series that ended recently.
