In Black Beans and Vice by Ellery Adams, the members of the Supper Club have decided that it is time to try a new weight loss method, so Lindy talks them all into trying hypnotherapy at the Wellness Village. It seems like a nice place, but when James Henry, the head librarian at Quincy’s Gap, takes his ex- wife, Jane, and 4- year- old son, Eliot, to the Fresh Food Festival, he first encounters protestors at the gate and then discovers the body of Councilman Ned Woodman in the bathroom. It seems that the Supper Club has another murder case to investigate together. However, just as they get started, they find another body.
In the meantime, Jane has been receiving threats in the forms of feathers and dead birds. Lucy, the police officer member of the Supper Club, works hard to track down the stalker. However, the messages keep escalating, leading to James’s getting more concerned about the safety of his family while he also stays busy with his work at the library and with his investigations into the deaths.
Black Beans and Vice is book six in the Supper Club series, and each book has been more compelling than the previous. The first couple books didn’t draw my interest as much as most book by Adams, one of my very favorite authors, but they were some of her earliest books. Now that Adams is continuing the Supper Club series, the high quality of writing that she has developed shines through. We feel a strong affinity towards the characters and deeply want to see each one succeed in life and love. The murder plot to this book is interesting, but not as strong as many other books by Adams. However, I found myself not caring very much about that because the book as a whole was exciting.
Karen White performs the audio edition of this book and continues in her excellent job of bringing this book to life. She brings out the drama of the book and makes it all the more effective. Her voicing of each character makes that individual seem highly realistic.
I really enjoyed listening to Black Beans and Vice and thought it was a very well- written book. The characters felt like friends whom I found myself rooting for and wanting to meet in person. I give this book five stars.

I’m glad there are more Supper Club books, too! Ellery Adams does a great job of portraying characters’ growth over a series which makes them all the more fun to perform. Glad you’re enjoying them.
