Critical Role Vox Machina Origins II continues with its strong storytelling and characters in issue #2. This is the second part of a six issue run and introduces Pike, created by Ashley Johnson, to the band of misfits as they continue to search for their comrade Grog.
After discovering Grog is within a mountain known as Gatshadow, Vox Machina sets out to retrieve him. But with a place that’s known to distill madness upon those that enter, the group is bound to run in to some terrible foes along the way.
While most of this issue is setup for things to come as well as exposition for Pike and Grog, there are still plenty of action sequences as well as tender moments between the characters. Pike and Grog’s relationship truly shines in this issue despite the fact they are separated. Considering as readers we’ve only just met Pike, it’s a true accomplishment for us to care so deeply for her in a short time.
Despite the fact that there are many characters in this group, Jody Houser does an excellent job at balancing all these strong personalities. She’s able to take the world the cast of Critical Role has created, break it down to its most basic parts, and serve it to the readers in such a fun, charismatic way.
As always, the characters are colorful renditions that Critters wouldn’t normally get to see. To be able to have a visual representation of what goes on at the table is sure to bring fans of show delight as well as get them hyped for the animated series currently in development.
