Bang! is a new release by Dark Horse comics that will be hitting shelves on February 19th. Written by Matt Kindt and drawn by Wilfredo Torres, Bang! is a caper with nods to the spy/mystery greats like James Bond, TinTin and Agatha Christie mysteries. It’s a twisting, turning maze of action and intrigue and the first issue only whets your appetite for more!
Dark Horse believes in this story so much that there is a trailer available, giving you a quick look into the characters and story-line.
There is a lot to like about this first issue, and it gives you hope for a solid run. The idea of Thomas Cord being just a code name like Bond is, is then given the twist of shared memories. It leaves you wondering if this newest, under 30 year old, black version of the spy is a clone, an automaton, or something even worse. And then to add that one of the main characters is a writer, using his words to move pieces around the board, like the world is a giant game of chess, is fascinating. (I am aware, that as a writer, I am biased here) The bad guy in this story is a group called the Golden Maze and it seems to possibly be a play on the Illuminati, seemingly bent on tearing the wold down so that it can rebuild it as a sort of utopia. Or at least, that was what I got out of it. Though I of course could be wrong, since this story moves sorta sideways sometimes, not really making anything too certain. I like that about it, leaving a bit for you to figure out.
The story is just beginning here in this first issue, but I’m already hooked. I can’t wait to see where Kindt takes these characters and how else he can twist the spy genre on it’s head. I am always a fan of a trope or genrre getting subverted and it seems like that is the play here.
Bang! will be available everywhere on February 19th and I really think you should check it out!
