‘Me Tambien’ Film is FAR Too Familiar

Editor’s Note: This video deals with sexual assault, sexual harassment, and that serious uh-oh feeling. We wanted to give a warning to anyone sensitive to these topics (as I know I am).

In just 17 minutes, the short film Me También follows two different women faced with serious harassment in their places of work. One is a Latinx woman, Cristina, who is regularly harassed by the man who has hired her to care for her children. The other is Monica, a woman who has finally been promoted only to find out that her new boss expects special favors for her promotion. The two find out they have much more in common than they think. Director and writer Valeria Vallejos stars.

Me Tambiénwas really hard to watch in full. The acting is wonderful, the design and script wonderful, but the subject matter is way too familiar. With our current Me Too climate women are finally opening up about something that many of us were told to keep our mouths shut over. Vallejos initially planned to just write and act in the film, but after male directors wanted to change the tone of the film, she decided to direct it herself. This is from the initial press release:

“When I originally wrote ‘Me También’, I had no intention of directing it, only acting in it. I initially approached a male director and producer I had collaborated with in the past, who were eager to take it on. But as time passed, they wanted to make changes to the script, altering the intended tone and voice,” recalls Valeria Vallejos. “When I objected, they went as far as to try and literally push me out of having any involvement with the film aside from acting on set. This is when I knew that if the film I’d envisioned was going to be made, I had to direct it myself,” she adds.

Me También has been circling the film festival circuit for the last year, winning Best Short at the Bentonville Festival 2019. The film will be released online officially Sunday March 8, 2020, for International Women’s Day.
