SXSW may have gotten cancelled, but there is still a bright spot short film that came out of the mess. Single is the story of a woman with one arm who unknowingly gets set up on a blind date with a guy with one hand. Pissed at the people who set her up, she and her date come to and understanding and have a serious heart to heart about what it means to be yourself in a world of ableists.
Ashley Eakin, the director and writer of Single has a physical disability and wanted to highlight the fact that there is not fair representation of folks like herself in film. This short film stars both Delaney Feener (as Kim) and Jordan Wiseley (ask Jake), both who also have physical disabilities. Single is a brilliant piece and a fantastic reminder that people are people, no matter what differences they may have. Both Feener and Wiseley shine in this piece and I would have loved for SXSW to have given them more play. Eakin, Feener, and Wiseley are all folks to watch.
