Oni Press is celebrating 10 years of the book Lola: A Ghost Story with a new edition. Written by J. Torress and illustrated by Elbert Or, the collection follows a Filipino family in grief by viewing their loss through the lens of local folklore. This new edition includes a revised ending and updated illustrations, so even if you’ve read it before, this is a new take.

Jesse didn’t really get a chance to understand his grandmother, his Lola in the Tagalog language. All he really remembers is that she tried to drown him as a baby. After her death, his family returns home to bury his grandmother, he learns many strange stories surrounding his grandmother and her visions. Jesse struggles with the same visions and is worried. His family is so involved in their own worries they aren’t able to help. He has to explore his new abilities and step in to help those he loves.

I absolutely adored the story in Lola: A Ghost Story. While this might be frightening for small children, older children and teens would be just fine reading this. The story allows the reader to deal with their own concepts of grief, while also experiencing it through Filipino folklore. For fans of myth and folklore this was a fascinating read. The art work is done in sepia tone coloring, and gives the reader a sense of remembering through the images. There’s also a glossary at the back with Filipino terms.

Lola: A Ghost Story, the 10th Anniversary edition is in comic shops March 25, 2020.
