There has been a music in the rumor industry longer than I’ve been alive that the real Paul McCartney died in a car accident and was replaced with a look alike. The new graphic novel from Paolo Baron and Ernesto Carbonetti is a gorgeous mixture of music, emotion, and rumors that have haunted the music industry for decades.
The story begins early morning with a music executive coming to speak with John Lennon and advise him that Paul has been killed in car accident. While panic ensues, the rest of the band is in the dark while music executives groom an exact lookalike. Paul is Dead is colorful, bright, and strange. It has a wonderful watercolor feel reminiscent of work by artists like Jill Thompson. The art alone is worth flipping through Paul is Dead. Its easy to devour in one sitting, but worth a reread.
