Mike wants to be a film producer in Hollywood, but instead he grooms dogs and eats Cheetos out of a bowl like cereal and creeps on his neighbors. He pitches terrible movie ideas to his friend and producer, Sebastian. He’s terrible at dog grooming, and makes “video art.” When a woman comes into the dog groomers and makes the mistake of saying she’d be willing to watch his video art, Mike starts dreaming about her. Also, his apartment is full of rats. With an incompetent landlord that doesn’t seem to know how to remove rats, Mike brings home a troubled cat from the groomer called Rosemary to handle his rat problem. Rosemary just might be the key to his undoing.
The film is written and produced by former music video director Michael Reich, and it shows. The film is mostly artistic shots, weird titles, and strange hybrid images. Sebastian is played by Flula Borg (The German dude from Pitch Perfect 2) and his words of wisdom to Michael are my favorite parts of this whole movie. During a scene where Sebastian and Mike are sitting in a cafe reviewing a “casting list” for an adaptation of the horror movie Carrie with cats, Sebastian advises, “as your producer I’m going to advise you this is a terrible, terrible idea, and I don’t think you should do it.” There’s also an amazing scene of him screaming at Mike about wanting to take a girl back to his “filthy rat palace.”
Be advised, this movie goes off the rails as often as it can. There is an entire scene of a man just squeezing dogs anal glands. There’s also a whole heart to heart between a girl Mike is on a date with where they discuss “duck breasts” from Howard the Duck. I legitimately did not have enough substances in my house to truly appreciate She’s Allergic to Cats. This is what happens when a horror movie is created by a music video director who used to play with VHS recording. I have no idea what I just watched, but I sort of want to make everyone watch it now. Is this how cult movies start? Pretty sure She’s Allergic to Cats is on its way.
