Check Please! is a LGBT webcomic that was started by Ngozi Ukazu in 2013 has finally dropped it’s final panel. On April 11, 2020 the final installation of the 7 year long story dropped. I cried.
Check Please! is the story of Eric Richard Bittle, aka Bitty. It’s a story of growth and courage and hockey and love. I came to it late, by a few years. I’ve never really read MM stories and I probably never would have read this one had I not stumbled upon it on a reddit for romance webcomics. The night I found it, I read all that was available. And then I had to do the one thing I hate (no seriously, I loathe). I had to wait. Which, ya know, put me in the same boat as readers who had been following it from the start. I am really lucky that I came to it near the end, I don’t think I could have waited to see how it would all end, see how the relationships grow. I honestly don’t know that I would have stuck. It would have been a mistake.
Check Please! is a sweet story that ends well. Really well. I don’t have any tie to the LGBT community, not in my family at least, but I am an ally and I have friends who are, and it’s not hard to hear the stories of how much angst and trouble and heartbreak there normally is in LGBT stories. So for this webcomic to have so much joy and love, well, it’s just a really good thing. Tiny Eric Bittle who only wanted to skate and to bake found his Prince Charming and his perfect Disney ending and it gives hope for all the kids out there who read this and think that they too deserve love. Because they do deserve love.
I literally cannot say enough good things about this story and Ngozi Ukazu. She, as a writer, keeps her readers happy with the story and extra content. She used Kickstarter like a boss to get the story into bookstores and she rules on Twitter like a queen. If you haven’t checked out Check Please! you should. Go. Right now. #teamzimbits
