In the zodiac, there are twelve creatures: the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. This is the order of animals that approach the Buddha for a banquet. There was a thirteenth animal: the cat. The cat was told the wrong date by the the rat. Why the rat did this was for his own reason but it did create a long standing feud.
In the shojo manga/anime classic, Fruits Basket, these zodiac creatures are the primary characters in the wealthy and influential Sohma Family. Each member has the ability to shape shift into their own characteristic zodiac animal when touched by the opposite gender. Enter Sawa Mitoma, a shy high school girl who gets to know the Sohma Family and became a major part in their story. Especially the it boy, “Prince-Like” Mutsuki (the rat) and Hajime (the cat). As Sawa uncovers the inner secrets of the Sohma family, she is also stuck between the rat and cat feud stemmed from that ill fated banquet from long ago.
Fruits Basket unconventional story setup of shape-shifting human/zodiac creatures provides just one level of shallow fun in this deeply heartwarming anime/manga. It’s airy style and innuendos is the right amount of fluff to counter the dark elements of characters that have been deprived of kindness and consideration in their lives. It also helps that this is a very sweet romance to enjoy.
The main manga series may have concluded in 2006, but now there are two new side story digital series for fans to enjoy from Yen Press!
The first series deal with the antics of the Three Musketeers: Shigure (the Dog), Ayame (the Snake), and Hatori (the Dragon) with Fruits Basket: The Three Musketeers Arc. The side story is written by Natsuki Takaya, the creator of the original Fruits Basket.
The first chapter premieres on 04/28/2020 and is priced at $0.99 on digital platforms.
The second is Fruits Basket Another is a spin off story of the next generation story as it contains new characters from the original cast. TThere are currently two chapters of the series to catch up on the third chapter will drop on 05/04/2020 and will be priced at $2.99
After the release of Fruits Basket: The Three Musketeers Arc 2, Chapter 1, fans won’t have to wait long for more Fruits Basket content. Fruits Basket Another, a Fruits Basket spin-off featuring new characters that include the children of the original cast, continues with Fruits Basket Another, Chapter 13, a satisfying read that combines three parts of Fruits Basket Another into a 64-page chapter. The new chapter debuts simultaneous to the Japanese release of the third part on 5/4/20 and is priced at $2.99.
