I have absolutely no idea what is happening in the new comic Ludocrats.
I was lured in by the bright happy colors and the expectations for an escapism into hilarity and insanity. Possibly a jaunt in a world like Wonderland? Perhaps into Fairyland?
Instead were pages of indeterminate reasons for outright bloodshed, sexual innuendos galore, and confounding characters. It was a comic that lies: a comic that promised hints of reason to prompt each page turn only to squirt even more nonsense. Even worse, it was enjoyable.
What kind of bonkers story have I been lured too?! Curses you, The Ludocrats, for ensnaring me with your colorful covers. For now I have a new world of crazy to add to my already teeming worlds of crazy.
To be fair, the creators did warn the reader
“We tried to imagine a better world. We failed. Instead, we did this.”
Page turn. Hello, rotund naked body of a man covered in blood. Oh, there’s adorable weird yellow squiggly things on the floor.
So it continues on. There is a wedding and it doesn’t go well for the groom. Everyone else is having a grand sexy time. That is the only cohesive and solid plot that be provided. Very, very quickly it is head spinning story line of lust at first sight, an octopus holding many syringes, and an explosion of chaos.
It’s a bit, way out there but it was definitely not boring and for some reason entertaining. It lives up to ludicrously well to the root word of it’s title. The art is very graphic with the violence and bloodshed but in a way that is palatable. It is so over the top and so unreal that it comes off as super comedic and absurd.
As for the characters, well, everyone is horny and has very capable skills at weaponry. The first issue established that in a very solid well. We’ll just have to see in further issues if we see any character developments or if at all.
The Ludocrats #1 arrives with a bloody bang, sapped the readers sanity, and kept on breezing by while fire missiles of sex and even more blood. It’s definitely not safe for kids or for anyone who lives by the strict code of normalcy.
