Two Necromancers, a Bureaucrat, and an Army of Golems: An Unconventional Heroes Publisher’s Pack Audiobook

It’s refreshing to know that someone has deeply thought about the methods and ways of the art of Necromancy. Necromancy has been one of the often overlooked and ignored (mainly due to fear) of the magic arts. It may be dark but it’s still art!

L.G. Estrella has authored humorous magical tales of the necro-matic flair through method the Timmy the Master of Necromancy and Katie, his young apprentice. The two create horrors of nightmares that love cake or create new hybrid zombies of terror (a salamander/ bear hybrid anyone?).  It’s not all just fun and undead creations.  There is also the boring tasks of maintaining castles and keeping his accounts in order at the Evertill Bank. For necromancers do have bank accounts. In order to that, they have to take quests to slay dragons or even go legit by signing on with the council.

Timmy is a great mentor. For no matter how dangerous, how perilous, or how psychotic their fire wielding elf companion is, it is always an opportunity to teach Katie in stealth, magic, and diplomacy.  Timmy may not like showy robes but he was powerful enough to survive the teachings of his Master.

The stories within the audiopack are so cute. It may not be as cute as Katie trying to kill Timmy with her shadows or the attempts by invisible ninja rats, but it is cute.  The stories have their moments of grand excitement of wraiths but for the most part, it’s low key and mellow. None of it was terrifying or induced nightmares.

Fred Berman narrates these tales and he is absolutely fun to listen too. His performance as  he transitions his voice to the different characters is smooth and distinct. His portrayal of Timmy is kind and generous but very solid and proud of his skills. Like an  everyday man wearing a polo short passing you by the street, all the while not knowing that he has a zombie hybrid lurking somewhere.  It is no wonder that Berman is so enjoyable and entertaining as he is a a Broadway performer. He has even played as Timon the Meerkat in The Lion King!

As enjoyable as the audiobook was, one couldn’t help noticing the repetition.  There was no escaping the repeating sequences or words such as how awful Timmy’s master was, how much Timmy wanted to ruffle Katie’s hair, or just the word “Master” in general. The repetition wasn’t a deal breaker but it did keep the story at a constant level of predictability. There aren’t any real surprises just pleasant instances. It really

All in all, listening to the audiopack was an entertaining work to listen to while knitting.
