Dropkick On My Devil!! Dash is the season that follows Dropkick On My Devil, an anime that’s based on a manga. The interaction between the supernatural characters and the mundane human world conjures up plenty of belly laughter and dropkicks. Warning: Light spoilers ahead!
Dropkick On My Devil (which is called Jashin-chan Doroppukikku in Japanese) is a manga series that’s written and illustrated by Yukiwo. A web magazine called Comic Meteor by Flex Comix first published it in April 2012 and it’s still going on now. Since then, the manga was adapted into an anime (Dropkick On My Devil) by Nomad. It first aired between on television between July 9 and September 17, 2018, but became internationally available on Amazon afterward. Dropkick On My Devil!! Dash, on the other hand, has been available on Crunchyroll since April 6, 2020, making it the most recent addition to the Dropkick universe aside from the manga.
In the first season, a witch named Yurine Hanazono summons Jashin, a literal snake woman from Hell. (The word Jashin means “evil god” in Japanese.) However, Jashin is unable to get back to Hell, which means she’s stuck on Earth for the time being. She spends her time with Yurine and other supernatural creatures such as Medusa and Minos, a girl with cow features. Then there are angels like Pekora and Poporon. All of these characters carry over into Dropkick On My Devil!! Dash.
Much like Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun, I appreciate how this anime doesn’t divide its worldview into angels = good and demons = bad. It also doesn’t vilify witches like a lot of other shows do. Instead, the characters have enough nuance to the point where they’re believable and unique. For instance, Medusa is what people would consider an “evil” (albeit misunderstood) Gorgon demon in Greek mythology. Nonetheless, she is Jashin’s only friend, something that speaks volumes about her good nature and patience.
Speaking of good-natured characters, if you’re not a fan of unlikeable characters, this probably isn’t the anime for you. Jashin is a total jerk. She’s not a jerk because she’s from Hell, though—that’s just who she is. She’s self-centered, arrogant, and easily angered. She’s probably one of the most epic jerks in anime history. Her special attack is the dropkick, which is also this anime’s namesake. She’s always trying to kill Yurine because aside from finding the spell to send her back. After all, that’s the only other way she can return to Hell. Fortunately, Yurine often puts Jashin in her place, making for hilarious confrontations when she holds Jashin accountable.
Dropkick On My Devil!! Dash has plenty of quotable moments. Despite being a jerk, Jashin-Chan has come out with plenty of sentences that should be emblazoned onto plaques to be remembered forever. One such quote is, “All things can be considered a form of transmutation.” Here’s another winner: “The greatest strength lies in nudity!” Nonetheless, more than anything, this show teaches you that living on Earth is harder than Hell.
To top all of this off, Baphomet narrates this whole season, just like he did for the season before this. I appreciate that he’s a lively, humorous narrator because I like anything that depicts Baphomet as cute and friendly. Baphomet represents the whole of the universe or “the bigger picture” (which is why Baphomet is androgynous and non-binary), so it’s fitting to make him an anime narrator.
