John Lewis is an outspoken Senator on many thing, but most will recognize him as a man who marched alongside Martin Luther King Jr. and got into what he called “good trouble” for the cause of Civil Rights during the 1960’s. In this new documentary, John Lewis: Good Trouble, we see a legend in action, not just in the past, but today.
John Lewis states that his philosophy is simple: if you see something that’s not right, not just, say something or do something. Get in Good Trouble. There are incredibly emotional moments where John Lewis sees footage of the Civil Rights movement and clearly seems touched. He is very careful to point out everyone who fought with him, often downplaying his own major legacy. The documentary discussed the clear and frustrating world of voter suppression. With expected wait times several hours, limited poling locations, and laws designed to prevent voters, many viewers will find this documentary hard to watch, but very familiar. It is difficult not to be angry with the government, to be angry with decisions that erode rights, especially after hearing how hard that the voter’s rights act was fought for.
John Lewis: Good Trouble is an incredible documentary and a great step for people looking to see what they can do to fight racial inequality.
