Kay (Emily Mortimer) and her daughter Sam (Bella Heathcote) both fear the worse when Kay’s mother Edna (Robyn Nevin) goes missing int he middle of the night. Edna suffers from Dementia and has been known to forget important things. After a police search and a search of the house turn of nothing, Kay begins frantically cleaning the house, as Sam tries to stay out of her way. When Edna returns with no clue to her previous whereabouts, Kay is highly concerned and Sam is just thrilled to have her grandmother back. Edna begins acting strangely, and soon the fear is that something truly frightening has taken control of Edna.
Relic premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. This Australian horror film has all the workings of a haunted house film, but with enough twists to keep the viewer hooked. Both Emily Mortimer and Bella Heathcote have made names for themselves in the past few years and give incredible performances. The film was written by Natalie Erika James and Christian White, as well as directed by Natalie Erika James. I would warn anyone who is currently working with a family member with dementia, or is afraid of very tight spaces, to maybe skip this one for the time being.
