Community‘s Gillian Jacobs stars as Kate Conklin, a first time writer who finds that her book did not do well as expected and her book tour is cancelled. With her dreams crushed and faced with friends who are moving on with their lives, Kate is thrilled to receive an invitation from a former professor (played by Jemaine Clement) to speak at her alma mater. She soon discovers the professor she once harbored a crush on now has a new favorite student, and is also married. She undergoes the super awkward process of revisiting her old rental home, reliving her college days, and making her way through an uncertain future.
I Used to Go Here addresses that uncomfortable season of life where your twenties have faded and things are falling into difficult places. Jemaine Clement is awkwardly charming. Gillian Jacobs’ facial expressions are meme-worthy for 2020. There are some awkwardly cringey moments, like one character ending up spending an evening with another character’s mom. The film was supposed to have a premiere at SXSW, but unfortunately those plans were scrapped when COVID-19 shut down the conference.
