We all know how 2020 has been: unpredictable, chaotic and just downright unforgiving from a social perspective. With so many conventions cancelling and/or switching gears to go virtual there are a lot of fans who miss the ability to “BE” at the event. Game On Expo (a video game themed con in Phoenix, Arizona) has decided to go a new direction for 2020 by introducing their “Mega Drive-In” event.
Making Social Distancing Cool
Let’s face it, conventions are NOT going to happen in the USA this year. In fact, the traditional convention model isn’t free of infection even when there isn’t a pandemic (hygiene + convention = minimal). So many comic, anime, game and tech conventions have had to rethink their modalities in 2020. Some went the virtual route using Zoom, Discord, Websites and Social Streaming as a means of sharing with their fans. While this is all good and well (FAR safer too) it does leave some feeling isolated. Enter Game On Expo who decided to throwback to the 90s and make social distancing cool by reintroducing the concept of “Drive Ins” to the public.
Game On Mega Drive-In is a social distance friendly convention using the Drive-In Theater modality as a convention ground. On August 7th and 8th, at WestWorld of Scottsdale, they will broadcast game themed Movies, Online Game Tournaments and a Virtual Cosplay Contest LIVE via outdoor big screens! Since COVID-19 is a MAJOR problem is this desert ridden state having a way for people to “meet” without coming into contact with one another is rather brilliant.
How Game On Mega Drive In Works
Here is the run down of how this event works…
- Attendees will purchase their tickets online or in person at WestWorld of Scottsdale (16601 N. Pima Rd Scottsdale, AZ 85260); tickets are sold PER CAR (not person).
- Once a ticket is acquired the attendee(s) will receive a parking spot and be provided with an FM Radio Station to tune into.
- Masks ARE required if you have to exit your vehicle for ANY reason (bathroom / food).
- Tournaments, Movies and a Cosplay Event will be presented on big screens for your viewing pleasure.
Since Arizona is KNOWN for its heat this event only runs from 6 PM – Midnight both days. Limited Staff will be onsite to help direct attendees who need to leave their vehicle for bathroom and/or food. Food is expected to be available but understand that you will be either texted or told when you CAN leave your vehicle as social distancing rules will be strictly enforced. Also, you MUST have a mask or you CANNOT leave your vehicle for ANY reason (rumor has it that masks may be available onsite but DO NOT count on that; please bring your own).
