The Walt Disney Company has announced that the next Pixar film, Soul, is going to skip theaters and go directly to Disney+ on December 25, 2020. However, in international markets it will still be released theatrically. Yeah, you read that right.
The film is unique in the fact that this time, Pixar is focusing on the human soul. It features a fabulous cast of Black Actors and amazing jazz musicians, including Jamie Foxx, Phylicia Rashad, Questlove, Angela Bassett, Daveed Diggs, Jon Batiste and a score done by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
Listen there’s a lot of things I could say here that would just get us in trouble, but the official line is that with the pandemic this needs to be a release to Disney+. Thankfully, it’s not going to be hidden behind a paywall like the failed Mulan adaptation that released earlier this year. It seems Disney has learned its lesson in that regard.
This film was an official selection for the Cannes Film Festival, and honestly the trailer brings me to tears. It will be show at the British Film Institute London’s Film Festival.
Soul is another pandemic casualty. and yes it’s okay to see the irony in that statement.
