‘Softies’

Kay has a big problem. She’s an Earth kid who has just been ejected from the newly blown-up Earth. After being accidentally taken in by a trash hauler ship, she’s got to come to terms really quick with a hard-working extraterrestrial named Arizona, and his well-read fox/dog/cat-like creature named Euclid. Arizona is happy to help Kay try to figure out what happened to Earth, even as they learn to live with one another and how to be their own type of family.

Once you get over the horrifying thought that in this graphic novel earth has just blown up and there is only one survivor, then you can get into the delightful word play of Softies. The series is designed for Sci-Fi loving kids, and does a great job of introducing new words to kids.  Think if Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy was written for children.   There’s characters like raccoon-looking creatures and some interesting social commentary.

Softies is written an illustrated by Kylie Smeallie and the book is designed for middle grade readers. At over 200 pages, its definitely something to tide over their imagination for a while.

Softies is available from Iron Circus Comics on October 20, 2020.
