Hellboy and the BPRD: The Seven Wives Club

Hellboy and the BPRD: The Seven Wives Club is the newest Mike Mignola release by Dark Horse.

At heart, The Seven Wives Club is a ghost story. If you love Hellboy stories because of the monsters that always show up, you will get that here, just in ghost form. The story revolves around a group of female doctors that goes very, very wrong very quickly. They were meant to be teachers at a school but the school was turned into a tomb.

Hellboy and a BPRD agent Pauline go searching for the truth about a possible murder, and find the ghosts which is good to prove the innocence of their friend, but not so good as pissed off ghosts are not fun to be around.

This story is good, just like every other story in this universe that I have read. Mignola has a great talent for always making even the worst monsters interesting. He’s especially good at it when humans are the monsters. Like many other things in this life, the Seven Wives Club started with perfectly normal women, and then turned sinister.

As an aside, that last art panel is so visceral, I stared at it for a few minutes before I headed here to write this up. It’ll stick in my head for a good long while and the artist, Adam Hughes, deserves all the art awards for that one single drawing. It’s possibly my favorite piece of comic art this year (let’s be real, the last five years).

Hellboy and the BPRD: The Seven Wives Club was released on November 11th by Dark Horse Comics.
