Edgar Allen Poe’s Snifter of Blood vol 2 continues to amaze and alarm with it’s pages full of irreverent thoughts and images, wrapped up in a style that doesn’t disappoint.
With four stories from amazing writers such as Mark Russell, Devin Grayson and Tasha Lowe-Newsome, this second volume adds to the previous one’s reputation of selecting the cream of the crop when it comes to choosing who will be a part of these issues. Ahoy Comics hasn’t gone wrong yet in their choices, and I actually don’t see it happening any time soon. (For such a young publisher, they sure are kicking butt)
Of the two comics in this volume (there are two comics and two short stories) I liked To Hell Comes a Guest for the story (cause Leprechauns) and The Tipple of Amontillado for the art. That might sound whiny or unappreciative, but it’s not. Both comics are good, but each of them has a strength for sure.
To Hell Comes a Guest is a fun, gore filled romp. Alongside the leprechaun, you also get to meet some vampires and a Tiger who rocks a suit. It is kinda hard to not laugh when you come across names such as “Lady Cocoa” and “Castle Honeycomb” so be sure not to be drinking anything, so as to avoid the spit take. The Tipple of Amontillado is a darker tone and a darker art. It pulls you in, in the best way.
When it comes to the stories, Tasha Lowe-Newsome’s Seven Ravens or Nevermore gets the nod as the best of all of it. I found that it hooked me faster than anything else in this volume and I’d gladly ready more of it, or more from it’s author. But Just becasue i liked Nevermore a tad better, doesn’t mean you shoudl discount The Faulty Scythe and it’s story of a reaper who’s a bit too interested in the monetary value of a soul.
Edgar Allen Poe’s Snifter of Blood vol 2 is being released Nov 18th by Ahoy Comics.
