Hellboy and the BPRD is back again with Her Final Hour and The Sending, two stories that are sure to suck you into this world, if you haven’t already been.
The first story of the duo is Her Final Hour and it’s a masterclass of horror tropes. There is death, a demon in disguise, what appears to be a Roma family (I know Gypsy is wrong, I think this is the right term) and a wooden creature brought to life with magic. The story is that of a woman scared for her life. A love that turned horrific and is cursing her. She is able to get Hellboy’s help, a debt he is repaying by saving her life. If you are not new to this world, then you’ll recognize it as a Hellboy story easily. I find that I find comfort in that. Some might say that the stories being so clearly in one style might get old, but I love it.
The second story, The Sending, is shorter than it’s predecessor. It doesn’t make it less effective. It is a ghost story in it’s simplest forms, but it is done so well that you don’t find it lacking. I am a big fan of the line “Second Library. Very nice.” It’s simple and a bit lighthearted among the gore. Plus who doesn’t love a mysterious, hidden library? The Sending is also cool since it features an old man helping to save the day and a nod to Icelandic ghosts.
As usual, you can’t go wrong with picking up a Dark Horse Hellboy release. This one came out today.
