Freiheit! The White Rose Graphic Novel is a timely story that will leave you unsettled. It is pretty much unlike any other graphic novel I have read before and that is both good and bad. There are a few spots where it might have benefited with more exposition, where I struggled to follow along with who was speaking but that is not enough to make me not recommend this graphic novel to everyone.
It tells the story of a group on University students who take it upon themselves to fight Hitler in the only way they could. The five members of The White Rose were aged between 21 and 25 and only worked for seven months before the Gestapo caught them and killed them. Their reign was short but in those seven moths they opened the eyes of many people to the atrocities the Nazis were committing. It’s a hard story to read, but worth it.
The art, done by Andrea Grosso Ciponte is evocative and drags you into the story easily. I really think that this is an important story to be told, and Plough Publishing did a beautiful job of giving it the respect it deserved. It’s a hard read, but an important one.
