Today, Dark Horse Comics released Young Hellboy written by creator Mike Mignola and co-writer Tom Sniegoski. Like every Hellboy before it, it rocks.
Thanks to comic artist Craig Rousseau, colorist Dave Stewart and letterer Clem Robbins, this issue of a younger Hellboy pops in a whole new style than what fans are used to. And it works! Absolutely. The colors are brighter, which leads this new younger hellion into a whole new adventure.
If you know me or follow my reviews for this site, you know I am an unabashed Hellboy fan. I love it. The mythology that Mignola created is in my top favorite media creations. So, when I say that this comic is good, I mean it. It easily stacks up to all the other Hellboy I’ve read. You don’t lose anything by reading about him as a youngster. In fact, you get a bit more extra sass, and giant crabs!
The issue is one of four, and it features Hellboy and Professor Bruttenholm lost on an island adventure. When their plans go awry, they have to survive, and they do it with panache. From evading a crazed man determined to kill the young demon, a plane crash, giant crabs and Kong, they survive what is thrown at them. I like that with a young Hellboy, we also get a young professor. It’s good to see how the relationship evolved from when Bruttenholm first found the red baby, to how he treats him as a son.
We also meet Scarlett Santiago, a jungle woman who saves Hellboy’s life. I’m curious to see how she continues to help him and the professor as they are still stuck on the island, that seems to want the two of them dead. I can’t wait to see what will come up in the nest three issues.
Hellboy has not disappointed me before, and I don’t see him starting to now.
