In 1973, author Stephanie Kane had a lot on her mind. In a few weeks she would be getting married and was dealing with a mother-in-law who didn’t seem to like her. One brief phone call would be the last time she heard from Betty Frye, and it would be the start of a decades long mystery that would haunt the family. In the book Cold Case Story, Stephanie Kane discusses not only the details of the case, but the personal strain that it placed on not only her husband’s family, but her. Even decades after she and her husband had divorced, the crime still haunted her. To help process her feelings, she wrote the fictional crime novel Quiet Time. Pretty soon, the cold case was back in her life and she was smack dab in the middle of a court case.
Stephanie Kane’s story is fascinating, but she’s also very careful to not make it all about her.
