On Monday I shared the kickstarter for this project, and hinted that I had gotten to chat with the filmmakers behind this project. I also gushed about it, because well, that’s what I do. I gush about Mignola and Hellboy. But without gushing any further, here is the quick interview I was invited to do with Jim Demonakos and Kevin Hanna.
Why Mike Mignola? Why now?
Mike Mignola is a genius, and, simply put, one of the most important comic book creators of all time, and the idea for us is to create a documentary about someone who is still active and still creating.
How did you choose who you would try to interview/ You have some big names. Anyone you wanted but couldn’t get?
We started off with Mike Mignola himself. After sitting down and having a long conversation with him, our next steps were to see who could speak to various parts of his career and his life. That gave us the building blocks to create a list of people that we thought would be able to shine the light on specific stories from Mignola. That said, no one has outright told us no, so we feel pretty lucky so
Why Kickstarter/? Were there other avenues you tried first?
As big proponents of Kickstarter and crowd-funding in general, we have backed hundreds of Kickstarters and feel like there’s no better platform to get something directly to the fans. We have been funding the production out of our own pockets until and this project felt like it hit an awesome space within both the film and comic book Kickstarter ecosystems that made sense to go directly to them to help finish this production.
What do you want to work on next? Any other creators you might want to bring to the spotlight?
We have started a production company and are committed to finishing Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters first, but then after that, we are 100% looking to do more creator-focused documentaries. Unfortunately, because we have already started filming for our next project, we can’t talk about the subject, but needless to say, she is amazing and we’re so excited to reveal it when the time comes.
*if you follow the link to Kickstarter, you’ll see that it is beyond funded, like, really beyond funded, and still has 28 days to go! (apparently I’m not the only Mike Mignola fan out there that thinks this is past due!)
