If you follow our site, then you know just how excited we’ve been for this comic. Issue #1 of Nocterra was released today from Image Comics. Scott Snyder’s return to creator owned comics is a doozy. No seriously, it’s so good. The story line is also, infinitely helped along by truly gorgeous art from Tony. S. Daniel.
Nocterra shoots out of the gate with a fast paced, seriously creepy story. I’ve read things like this before, that don’t succeed in grabbing you the way Snyder has and that is the real win here. At no point was I uninterested. It hooked me from the get go and I stayed hooked and I’m not so patiently witting for what comes next.
Nocterra is story that tells you you were right to be afraid of the dark. In this not so distant future the dark is littered with Shades, poor humans who were stolen to the dark side by a vicious sickness that can only be stalled by light. And light, well it’s in short supply.
This story starts out with the background of the day the sun went dark. Val, our main character, is just a kid. She doesn’t stay a kid for long. The time jump brings us to the modern day and now Val is a trucker, hauling people to safety whenever she can. She still watches her adoptive brother, and she is doing all she can to keep them alive. If I say much more, it’ll be spoilers for sure.
Without spoiling the story, I want to clearly get across how cool it is. It’s only a first issue and there is always room for it to take a deep dive into the realm of eh but I don’t think it will. I think Snyder took a common fear and played with it until he developed a really cool wold that I want to know way more about. It’s been a long time since the hype was so on point.
Nocterra doesn’t disappoint
