One of the most touching films in the SXSW film festival is See You Then. Kris and Naomi are meeting up after decades following a rather sudden break up in college, and unexplained departure on Kris’ part. Kris and Naomi were together for three years as a male and female couple. Now decades later, Kris has transitioned to female and the film follows their discussion over dinner, including the experiences of being a woman and the difficult conversations that we hold back in the name of who we think we are.
See You Then asks the uncomfortable questions that people wonder about, including what happens when who you are doesn’t match how you were born. For those who want an empathetic look at transgenderism and transition, this film feels very real and like one is listening into a private conversation. There are times when emotions are high, when horrible things are said in pain. The confrontation doesn’t feel like it’s just for the characters, but also for the viewer and how we express our expectations of women and the Trans community.
See You Then is streaming at SXSW this week until Sunday.
