I have been anticipating this comic for a long while now, and I just….I’m still on the fence of whether or not it was worth the wait.
Vault Comics new release, Witchblood #1 is a mish-mash of some of my favorite things. A witch, a road trip, the wild west and vampires? Yes Please!
That being said, Witchblood does deliver on the weirdness you’d expect from the taglines and the twitter pr, it does. Most of the time. But it feels like there is something missing. I’m not sure what, but that feeling is definitely there.
Witchblood is the story of Yonna, an immortal witch who is traversing the desert, trying to stay alive, with her motorcycle and her crow as her only companions. The art and character design of her and the world she inhabits is fantastic, it’s all bright and punk, and that mixed in with the desert scenery is wicked. The same can be said for the vampire antagonist who shows up near the end, looking for mystical powers. They look good. They talk like my internal voice. (all swearing, all the time) I think the thing of it is, as cool as the concept and the art is, I’m not sure that the emotions are there.
I will read more, I’m curious what comes next, but I’m definitely not emotionally invested. I want to be. I hope to be. Maybe the second issue will deliver that.
Like I said, the story line is good. The characters are great. I really like the way they set it all up with the narration. I do like it, I just think I could have loved it and that’s disappointing.
