The Silver Coin is a new series from Image Comics. Written by Chip Zdarsky and drawn by Micheal Walsh, The Silver Coin is a story about greed and witchcraft, or well, magic.
The story starts in 1978 and features a three piece band that is not having the best time ever. Their music is okay, but rock is dead and disco is king. This leaves lead guitarist Ryan with a deep well of anger, that is stupidly easy to corrupt.
It’ll be hard to avoid spoiler’s here, but things start to change for them once they find the coin. The upward swing is of course magical, and even as Ryan starts to fall deeper and deeper under it’s spell, his other band mates are clearly not interested in selling their souls for what the coin offers. Again, I don’t want to give spoilers, but the ending seems to be just deserts with a splash of cliffhanger.
Since this is only a first issue, I’m not sure whether the story lien will stay in 1978, stay orbiting around rock music, but I did love that for the beginning of this story. Zdarsky and Walsh have done a great job of making you feel like you’re entrenched in the late 70’s and the whole emotion of the story and setting really hit you. I also really loved how the bleakness was woven trough the story and the characters. The time period and the music and the whole feel of this story is enveloping and it’s hard for a comic writer to do that well, but Zdarsky definitely managed it here.
With only this first issue as a basis to go on, I’m really hoping to see more of the music and the evil in the next few issues. I am rooting for this series so hard, I want each issue to be just as good as this first one was.
