Bus vs. Trash truck–why not?
“You can’t outrun…who you really are.”
But you can really, really try, which is where Shang-Chi (Simi Liu) seems to be as the trailer for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings begins. He’s been living a normal(ish?) life with a girlfriend, good friends, and plenty of laughter. Then action happens: There are fight scenes in the present and fight scenes in the past, chases on horseback and chases in buses–with trash trucks. Why not? I mean, if you want to smash a bus, a garbage truck is a good choice for the job–big, heavy, and reasonably well armored.
The juxtaposition between battles in the present and past is a good visual shorthand showing just how long this conflict has been going on: There are clearly generations involved in the battle, and it is not going to stop just because one man says so. Shang-Chi is going to have to use all the considerable determination and skill he shows in the various combat scenarios.
Of course, if you do not know anything else, the trailer isn’t going to tell you: Who are these people, why are they fighting, and what is it Shang-Chi is supposed to be doing? Should we cheer for the father or the rebellious young man? Both? Neither? Who is he Adidas wearing bus driver? Why is she so peppy? How did she end up driving the bus? How many product placements can you spot?
The good side of this is that the past couple of decades (!?) have shown that Marvel is capable of tackling a wide range of genres and characters in their movies. Also, this is a teaser: We should be getting something more informative soon.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings comes out September 3, 2021.
Does anyone know how the top speed of a city bus compares to the top speed of a garbage truck?
