Today Jim Henson’s The Storyteller: Tricksters is back with another amazing tale. This time it’s A Heart That Beats Forever. This story is that of Eshu the trickster God (God of Change) of the Yoruba.
In this issue we learn the story of Eshu and Lolla, a girl who tricks a trickster. Told in the style we all love, The Storyteller answers the door to a traveler who teaches him to sing a song of a story, becasue a story is a heart that beats forever.
The story that the traveler spins is one of a bored god and young girl who had previously met, though the god had forgotten. Meeting again, Lolla has a need that only the God of Change can give her and he at turns, helps and hinders her. When her tale is done, he is angry with her and decides to trick her, never knowing that he is the one in fact getting tricked. It’s such a beautiful way that Lolla gets what she truly wants, and it is a lovely story about stories told.
Going into this issue, I had never heard of this religion nor it’s gods, and I found this comic to be a great jumping off point that lead me to looking them up to get more details. The Storyteller has always been great at that, at getting you interested in what he’s telling you. And as usual, the art is gorgeous. It pulls you in like a hug. I’ve never been disappointed in one of these comics and I wasn’t here. I’m looking forward to what other tricksters The Storyteller will introduce us to in the last two issues.
