Lady Baltimore: The Witch Queens #2

And we’re back to pseudo – World War II with Lady Baltimore: The Witch Queens #2.

As I said when I reviewed the first of this series, I didn’t know anything about the Lord Baltimore series and I maintain that you don’t need to in order to enjoy this. The titular character Sofia is snarky and badass and also, gratifyingly human. In this second issue you get to see more of her grief over her husband and her probably justified distrust of the boys club, The Orphic Society, who admit to wanting her help due to her husband’s legacy.

This second issue also gives us more of Imogen, who I might actually like more than Sofia. Imogen gives Zero F’s and is obviously more powerful then even her comrades know. Together, the two woman are hellbent on stopping the Hexenkorp’s march and while they seem to differ on how to do that, they aren’t letting that stop them. In this issue they get new allies, but the good doesn’t last long when there is fire involved.

As with the first issue, this one serves up a great mix of action and heart. The fight scenes are well done and the dialogue is charming. I love the cast of characters we’ve met so far and am looking forward to seeing what comes next.

The only not great thing about this issue was the advertising breaks in the middle of the story. I’m trying to remember if the first issue was like that, or if they saved all that mess for the back of the issue like most comics do. Either way, it was jarring, and the first time it happened I tonight maybe this was just a much shorter story than normal, but nope, it happened twice. It’s not enough to put me off the story itself, but it certainly annoyed me.

Lady Baltimore: The Witch Queens #2 was released today from Dark Horse comics.
