I have been waiting and waiting for this story to come out and then I had to go and wait some more, but that last bit was my own fault (shakes fist at the dang universe). But here I am to gush about Everfrost, a SciFi story with a badass female lead and a scientific soul.
Everfrost tells the story of Van, a scientist on a planet turned to ice after alien life landed. It bounces back and forth between past and present; the past informing you of her character and giving insight into her current decisions. It’s a delicate balance, done beautifully in these pages. In such a harsh environment, it is good to see that Van is not alone. Instead she is making her way through the world with Eight, a creature that looks to be a talking monkey hybrid (that reminds me an awful lot of Rocket Racoon, in attitude).
Though Van is the main character, in this first issue we also meet a few others, what appears to be a freedom fighter from a group called the Bloom and a woman turned robot who appears to be a fighter for the city forces. Neither of them get names, which is a cool stylistic choice as you immediately assume that their identities are their groups and that makes the fight between them have a bit more weight.
I don’t want to give much more, avoiding spoilers is always a tricky step to make. What I do want to say, is that for a first issue, Everfrost totally lives up to the hype. It’s smart and snarky and it drags you into it’s world with no fuss. Lately I’ve been burned by hyped up first issues but this one, it was exactly what I wanted. I cannot wait to see where the story goes.
