You see? It’s the witch. Sarah Fier’s back.
She reaches from beyond the grave to make good men her wicked slaves.
She’ll take your blood! She’ll take your head! She’ll follow you until you’re dead!
Many, many moons ago, there was a young woman (me) who dared to venture beyond the pastel shelves of Babysitters Clubs and Sweet Valley High books. The curiosity of the dark compelled the young woman (once again, it was me), into picking up a Goosebumps novel called “Welcome to Dead House” by R.L. Stine. It lured the young woman (me, me, me) with it’s purple and black colors on the cover and immediately snared her within the first page. It was scary but it was oh so thrilling. The Goosebumps series brought the monsters like Abominable Snowman and evil goo to go after frightful but mostly resourceful kids.
As with other readers, Goosebumps was the kindergarten step of the Horror genre before sliding on blood slicked shoes right into the Fear Street series. The Fear Street series were definitely much more bloody but still the same R.L. Stine cheesiness. So it was palatable for a young person who was (still is) scared of the dark and people in general.
From what I remember; it’s been so long since I cracked open a Fear Street novel. I remember stories centering around killers and high schoolers. Usually someone was being a targeted. I believe cheerleaders were involved a few times. I do remember the very 80’s slasher type font and the very cheesy cover art. It was very reminiscent of the B-movies with dramatic poses and backlit. It was scary but it was cheesy scary. There was a bunch of murders and deaths in this one street. And when I think back on it, I can just hear Offsprings’ “The Kids Aren’t All Right” playing in my head.

Now, Fear Street is coming back. In the form of THREE movies on Netflix:
FEAR STREET PART 1: 1994 on July 2, 2021.
A circle of teenage friends accidentally encounter the ancient evil responsible for a series of brutal murders that have plagued their town for over 300 years. Welcome to Shadyside.
FEAR STREET PART 2: 1978 on July 9, 2021.
Shadyside, 1978. School’s out for summer and the activities at Camp Nightwing are about to begin. But when another Shadysider is possessed with the urge to kill, the fun in the sun becomes a gruesome fight for survival.
Reading about the murders and death is one thing. The reader (me) can easily skim past or just close the book. Watching it onscreen is a completely a different matter. The first trailer recently dropped and it does look like buckets of blood will be involved. It also looks like a fun return to the teen slasher movies. In the sense of lots of screaming, lots of snark, and lots of pretty people. The brief glimpses of the background does not seem realistic at all so here’s to hoping that it’s entertaining stylized horror adventure.

“The thing that ties Fear Street to people all over the world is that we all have the same fears. It doesn’t matter what country you’re in, everyone is afraid of the dark, or afraid somebody’s lurking in the closet, or afraid of being in some strange new place they’ve never been before. We all have the same fears.”- R.L. Stine, Author of the best-selling horror series Fear Street
“We filmed all three Fear Street movies over one crazy, bloody summer. It’s a dream that audiences now get to experience the story in the same way – back to back to back, with only a week of waiting in between. I can’t wait to welcome everyone into the world of Fear Street in 1994, 1978 and 1666!”- Leigh Janiak, Director of the Fear Street trilogy
