‘I Am Not Starfire’

Mandy’s mother is the Titan Starfire. Mandy is so different from her mother that she struggles to find any kind of common grown. Goth, gay, and plus sized, all Mandy wants to do is graduate from high school, skip college, and head to France. She’s grown up with Starfire as a single mother; Starfire who is gorgeous, sparkly and a superhero.  Mandy is partnered with Claire, a girl she’s had a crush on forever. That’s when things start to change. When Starfire’s history catches up with them, Mandy may be the only one who can step in and save the day.

I Am Not Starfire truly captures that miserable experience of high school when you are not part of the popular crew; especially when you are a different gender or subculture. In this case, Mandy has an angry nature because she is spending so much time trying to protect herself and her friend Lincoln from everyone around them. While her actions are not always called for, it is extremely easy to relate to Mandy’s experience.  The graphic novel is a team up between Mariko Tamaki (Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass) and artist Yoshi Yoshitani (Zatanna and the House of Secrets).

I Am Not Starfire comes to DC Young Adult Graphic Novel line July 27th.
