In Case of the Dysfunctional Daredevils by Jeffery Poole, the corgis, Sherlock and Watson, take a back seat to the adventures of their human, Zachary Anderson. Ashe, a U.S. marshal, approaches police detective Vance for help in tracking down a mass killer whom he believes is in or near Pomme Valley, Oregon. The marshall thinks the killer has joined the ranks of the Dysfunctional Daredevils, a group of people who attempt death-defying feats. Soon, Vance gets dragged into joining the group undercover, taking with him Zac and their veterinarian friend Harrison. Already, one man has died while sky diving. And when the trio tries their first adventure, another one dies in white water rapids. Together, Zac, Vance, and Harry team up to locate and capture the killer.
I have enjoyed the previous Corgi Case Files audiobooks, but I didn’t like Case of the Dysfunctional Daredevils as much as the previous books. One difference between Case of the Dysfunctional Daredevils and the previous eight Corgi Case Files audiobooks is the fact that Sherlock and Watson play a much less significant role than in the previous audiobooks. They help provide a few clues, but the humans do the majority of the detection. I missed getting to spend more time with the dogs. I also found it annoying that Zac mainly refers to Jillian as “my fiance” rather than by name. I wouldn’t mind it if he used the term periodically, but in rarely using her real name, Zac seems to dehumanize Jillian.
Bob Johnson performs the audiobook of each Corgi Case File book and does an excellent job of embodying the character of Zac, the narrator of each book. Each character reveals her or his true nature through the work of Johnson.
Though I was not as happy with Case of the Dysfunctional Daredevils as with previous books, I still enjoyed this adventurous book. It’s nice, comfortable listening, perfect for those days when you don’t feel like an intense audiobook but instead want something creative and fun. I give this book three stars.
