On Monday I was lucky enough to share an interview with cartoonist Victoria Grace Elliot about her graphic novel, Yummy: A History of Desserts and today I’m back to review it. Basically my review boils down to: read it!
Yummy is a history told by Peri the Sprite, and it delves into so much, but it never overwhelms. There are chapters for Ice Cream, Cake, Brownies, Donuts, Pie, Gummies, Cookies and Macarons (which are cookies…but you know, fancy ones!)
Each chapter is laid out ahead so you know exactly what’ll be mentioned and at the end of each chapter is a recipe. In the cake chapter you get a recipe for Funfetti Cake, many a kid’s favorite. At the end of the pie chapter is a recipe for Blueberry pie, and then you get a Snickerdoodle recipe at the end of the cookie chapter. I would have loved a recipe for Madalines in that one, as they’re my favorite but it’s okay.
This graphic novel is written perfectly for a young baker or an older one as well. I’ll definitely be giving it to my daughter who loves to bake and will find this fascinating. I really loved the whole of it and even though it feels a bit long at around 250 pages, it’s worth every one of them. It’s art is so bright and colorful and engaging and it will easily suck you in.
Yummy: A History of Desserts was released on October 18th by Random House Graphic and can be foudn everywhere! Make sure you grab the baker in your life a copy.
