Hecate’s Will Issue #4- Review

Share

Guess who’s back! Sorry for the hiatus, dear readers. Your Prince has been going through things but I’m back because when Iolanda Zanfardino calls, I answer. Today as a prelude to pride month and to celebrate my glorious return: we’re looking at Hecate’s Will #4.

Okay, I’ll say this. This volume hit different. There’s a lot going on that feels very of the times. Without spoiling too much there’s homophobia, police violence, social commentary and just…with everything going on this feels particularly important but I’ll also say that I’m glad I waited till I was in a better mindset to approach it. I live about an hour and a half from Uvalde which just had one of the deadliest incidences of mass violence against children in the US and seeing the police be trash to queer people and POC in general and then compounded as pride quickly approaches put me in a very contemplative headspace. But I think that’s why works like this are so important. Zanfardino has always been able to loop in commentary in a way that is smart, topical and most importantly: human. This doesn’t feel like tokenism or done to get people talking. It feels authentic and that’s probably why it hit so different.

This issue is filled with capital D DRAMA and it feels like everything is rushing towards a conclusion that is probably going to make me cry. I am so invested in this story that pulls together some of my favorite things like queer representation, Greek mythology and truly thoughtful social commentary.

As always, this is highly recommended and if you’re behind, I super suggest picking up issues 1-3 for a nice read ahead of the official release of issue 4.

Thank you to Iolanda Zanfardino for letting me read this! I am so thankful and this felt so appropriate and needed.

Hecate’s Will Issue 4 by Iolanda Zanfardino comes out 6/1 where fine comic books and graphic novels are sold.
