(and yes Bri, I used the post from Our Flag Means Deathposting. Love my crazy crew).
If you’ve missed the recent phenomena of Our Flag Means Death, chances are you’ve still seen social media exploding with people talking about Taika Waiti, Rhys Darby, and Queer Pirates. After a nervous few months wondering if we’d be suffering the pangs of loss and have to take to the high seas in protest, HBO Max has announced today that the television hit will be renewed for a second season.
Let’s be real; HBO waiting until June 1st is most definitely a Pride Month marketing “fuckery” (to quote the parlance of the show). For the past month, small hints have been dropped by members of the cast. Samson Kayo, the actor who plays Oluwande, jokingly advised a short while ago about needing to buy new Crocs, referencing the shoes he wears on the show. Fans have been thrilled by the acknowledgment of Jim, a Non-Binary character. Vico Ortiz, who plays Jim, has delighted in the fact that even in Spanish translation, the show uses non-binary terms that don’t gender Jim or Vico. It may seem like a small thing that many folks wouldn’t notice, but the use of respectful language is astounding!
Listen, we’ve been through Destiel. We’ve watched Sherlock queerbait the hell out of us. Now, we finally have a show with real queer representation and I know I’m not alone in celebrating its return. The fan art alone has been majestic. The community is astounding.
Get out the grog folks, it’s time to celebrate (if you don’t drink, tea with 7 sugars. It wouldn’t be the same with 6).
