Will and Maggie Scripps are doing their best to live life in Brooklyn in 1942. As war rages on, Will does his best to help scout sites for the Manhattan Project. He has to keep the locations quiet and hopes that the more helpful he is the better chance he will have to work for the scientists on the project itself. Maggie works as a welder in the local shipyard and writes down all her worries in letters to her deceased mother. Their world gets a heck of a lot more complicated when the two discover a strange woman unconscious under their front stoop. After they help her recover, they discover that the woman is not necessarily what they expected. With a knowledge of poisons, a talent for killing rodents and spiders, and a knowledge of German, Ruby might be someone very dangerous. Ruby slowly seduces both Will and Maggie and puts them both at extreme risk for outside forces.
Lydia Kang creates a fascinating character in Ruby Fielding. Not only is she smart, but she has a chaotic energy that fascinates. Readers both feel for her and also long to see her punished. There are some fascinating aspects of the war effort and secret projects that spur on the feeling of mystery.
