OK, all you audiophiles out there! Tonight is the night! At 9 p.m. EDT, the 28th annual Audie Awards will take place, hosted by writer, comedian, television host, and actress Michelle Buteau!
Hosted by the Audio Publishers Association (APA), the 2023 Audie Awards began the summer with hundreds of titles for the first round of judges to start narrowing down our list of favorites. These most experienced judges listened to half an hour each of numerous audiobooks in order to weed out most selections and produce a list of a more reasonable number of audiobooks for the second round judges to listen to.
Each second round category contained 15 to 50 audiobooks that needed to be scored and ranked in order of the top seven audiobooks. Fortunately, we second round judges didn’t have to figure out the exact rank of books that didn’t make our personal top 7, as it would have been tricky for me to create an order of the lower ranked audiobooks, accounting for all 40 or so books I evaluated.
I had the fall to listen to those 40 books and submit my ranking before the APA moved on to getting people to judge the finals in the early winter. With a total of 135 books nominated as finalists in 26 categories, the APA announced the finalists only two or three weeks ago, and tonight will be the big gala to celebrate the winners!
