Eric LaRocca has the incredible talent of actually creeping me out. His short story collection, This Skin Was Once Mine and Other Disturbances, is full of tales that will leave you contemplating them for days.
The book starts with the story, This Skin Was Once Mine, following a woman returning to her parent’s home after the death of her father and the impending death of her mother. She soon discovers a dark secret her father has been keeping for twenty years. There are tales of people drawn into mutilation cults by the basic act of simply buying cutlery, and those of dares that have dangerous consequences. Eric LaRocca’s style of writing is powerful, haunting, and so good and winding you up into the story he tells, that you don’t know you’re bound in the story until it jars you at the end.
