Ursula Morrow did not expect to end up in a refugee camp on a foreign planet running a bar. Two years past, she lost everything when an alien race known as the Cutters descended upon travel lines mapping the universe and systematically killed as many human beings as possible on planet Earth. Under a ruse that she’d be escaping the planet with her boyfriend, Jack, Ursula boarded one of the last ships off of Earth. Only, Jack never showed up. There’s also the unfortunate fact that Ursula is infected with an alien virus from a long-ago created weapon. When Jack emerges in the refugee camp, now married to his spaceship (it really is a whole thing, y’all), Ursula finds herself being recruited to try and rescue the remaining former residents of Earth with her ex and a cast of familiar faces from her past.
Future’s Edge starts off bleak and author Gareth Powell is certainly not afraid of an action sequence. When we first meet Ursula, she is putting out a flare with her bare hands and kicking out wannabe gangsters from her bar. Powell’s characters are a delicious blend of trope and detail that create a cast that the reader really ends up rooting for. Powell also has that delightful skill of putting in a reference to something simple and mundane, before throwing it back in the reader’s face with an emotional burst. Future’s Edge alternates from the perspective of Ursula, but also Jack’s ship wife, The Crisis Actor.
Fans of The Expanse and other bleak Sci-fi properties with great dialogue will deeply enjoy Future’s Edge.
