When the Dungeon Master has you encounter the skeleton in a level one cave, it can all seem like a quick kill. What if that skeleton was a low-level monster with a 400-year-old nightmare gig, perpetually greeting and being cut down by adventurers? Welcome to Syd Madia’s new graphic novel, Hero Cave. In Hero Cave, an unnamed skeleton has an existential crisis over his job. As a Millennial with severe burnout from decades of corporate jobs, I feel this skeleton’s plight in… well, my bones, okay? The skeleton suffers with daily nightmare shifts, a performance review with a wizard boss, and unhelpful coping mechanisms. In short, this skeleton feels like almost everyone I know.
Fans of Dungeons & Dragons and other Fantasy properties, especially those who have worked in the corporate work, will adore Hero Cave. The printed version is accented with a foil-cardstock cover, while the inside is muted with the occasional spot coloring.
