Author AJ LoCascio and artist Laurie Conley bring to life adorable Halloween spirits known as the Spoops: The Little Spirits of Halloween, in this children’s book of the same name. The whimsical story follows Holly Hollowell and her quest to enjoy Halloween for the first time. Holly’s parents are dentists and see Halloween as the prime time for tooth rot. As such, Holly is banned from Trick-or-Treating and finds herself watching other children have fun year after year. When her parents are called to a conference on Halloween night, Holly receives a little magical help to make her Halloween dreams come true. She soon finds a way to share the sprits and joy of the holiday, showing her parents that tooth-rot is not the only thing involved.
Laurie Conly’s art is absolutely adorable and gives the book a warm Fall feel. The limited color scheme of black and white with the occasional pops of orange color are perfect for the story. AJ LoCascio’s work is told in rhyming verse, giving the book a nostalgic feel not unlike reading Twas the Night Before Christmas, or a variety of other holiday stories. I absolutely love that LoCascio doesn’t shy away from using some advanced language, giving kids a chance to learn along with their folks. Spoops: The Little Spirits of Halloween is definitely a book to read along with the family.
