Imagine if young women at your college began to spontaneously combust if they couldn’t talk back. What if your teenage daughter began turning into a prehistoric creature over a 9-day period? Hailey Piper’s short story collection Teenage Girls Can Be Demons doesn’t stop there. There are stories of pranks gone horribly wrong, and women seeking revenge after decades, but what all the stories have in common are the essence of what it means to be a woman in a world not designed for women and how that transforms our very essence.
Hailey Piper’s vibrant and detailed horror stories are dark and twisted, but all have that familiar discomfort women will understand. Piper also doesn’t just include those assigned female at birth, but transwomen as well, creating an inclusive view that never feels forced or heavy handed. Teenage Girls Can Be Demons explores what it means to be transformed by the world around you, whether or not you’re ready for it. Hailey Piper isn’t just a talented writer, but one who creates believable worlds and characters that linger in your mind long after you close the book for good.
Teenage Girls Can Be Demons by Hailey Piper is now available from Titan Books.
